This is an effort by Adobe to be the leader in the digital imaging industry. Although it has the professional market in mind from the beginning, it has also included consumer features and options to make the program more accessible and user-friendly. Finally, it goes a step further and includes features that were not even dreamed of before Lightroom was created. That is what makes Lightroom so powerful and so popular.
I think the new Masks Lightroom panel is far more powerful than the old Mask Lightroom panel, not least because editing masks is now equally as accessible as other panels, as opposed to the old version where editing masks seemed to require more interaction to create a mask, but that’s a mere minor criticism.
Another thing is that if you are using the new CC beta version (or anything outside the CC download area, for that matter – the version available in the CC beta is the same one that’s available to upgrade to), the new Masks panel is locked. There is no lock icon showing around the panel and running under LR5.2 RC it doesn’t function properly. Maybe that’s a bug?
Sadly, the web doesn’t provide the support that Photoshop offers. For example, you can’t actually zoom in and out to see the individual pixels. Also, you can’t use filters. Some other web applications have tried to come close to Photoshop by having a limited set of editing tools, but ultimately they have failed to achieve what Photoshop does.
