When do you need to cite a blog post?
I am a PhD student and a peer researcher at my institution.
I receive one or two emails per week from people who have written a paper they think I will be interested in seeing, or who have written a blog post that might be of use to me.
I want to do the right thing by the people who send me these emails, but I am by no means an expert in the topic at hand, and it would take me weeks to read everything in detail.
Typically, I just use the email to show that I’m reading their paper or blog. If the person writes to ask my thoughts on their work and I have the time to respond, I tell them I’m interested and provide a link to their paper or blog. If the person just sends an email without an associated link, I don’t reply.
Where in this process should I be citing the original source? Do I need to provide a link in the email, do I need to provide a link in my comments, or do I need to cite it in my response?
I think you should cite the original source in any email conversation. I usually say something like this:
You must have read this paper. It must be really cool, if you did
get to the end.
I’ve been reading your paper. I found it really interesting.
