I installed the new version and updated an existing collection into the new Lightroom version with the new catalog (I’m using Lion). I’m able to view the images in both versions and have been happily using Lightroom 4 for the last several months. When I imported the remaining images into Lightroom 5, I didn’t have a choice of a new vs. an existing library. I chose the existing library and was asked to overwrite – since there was only one library. I thought I had made my choice and chose yes. After completing the import, I went to the Library and it was clear the new Lightroom 5 library had been created. I have no choice but to separate my new images into a different library. If I had a choice, I would have chosen an option that continued the existing version number (and used the new catalog).
This Mac application is not all that new, but it is doing some interesting things. I tried to do the same thing in CS6 and it was slower. I have not used the boatload of shape tools and filters that are in this. I think there are a lot of useful creation tools for a designer to use this. If I used more shapes I might prefer Illustrator. But I saw a lot of differences in quality, and was a bit surprised out of the box to see that more than just a few options in the Photoshop interface is where the money is being spent for this upgrade. I see a way to transform pages as well as layers in Photoshop, but the option is not always there and a lot of my selection is done in Illustrator so if that option were in both AD then wow. I’m going to have to look at this at some point.
