BELOW: While I’d like to say that I can explain the issues I had with the new version of Adobe Photoshop when I wrote that review in early 2017, and that some of my problems were worked out over the past year, it’s more correct to say that I’ve continually had problems with the software.

Adobe created the Elements application years ago. In that time, Photoshop has added features that Elements lacked. There is a lot of overlap in functionality, and although you can accomplish many things with Elements, many more are simply not possible with it. Elements 6 has some powerful new functionality, including Smart Objects and Smart Filters. This review will address those design forms, and compare the two Adobe apps on features for design on different Windows platforms and Macs.

To our knowledge, all of the negative reviews were avoided by other reviewers, which makes their influence hard to determine. We’ve only looked at Lightroom reviews so this may be different for other software, such as Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop is perhaps the most advanced photo and graphics editor software for professional use. It’s a perfect utility for creating digital art and editing home images. Photoshop stands for “Photoshop Elements.” When the program was first released in 1992, its only feature was the ability to edit bitmap graphics (pictures). The CS4 version was the first to offer users the ability to extract different portions from an image to its own new document, Thumbnail or Layer. It also introduced the Layer Factory, a maintenance-free way to create combinations of overlapping images. Next was the introduction of the Liquify tool, which let users “warp” or zoom in on a particular region of an image, and also convert it to a regular image or a transparent layer. The original Liquify blend effect layer allows users to create a curvy effect with the Free Transform tool.

In addition to these updates, Adobe is also planning to build on their work in further developing AI tools, such as Adobe Sensei, to streamline working on the creation of artwork and photos. There’s also an assortment of updates planned to be released throughout the year.

The five-year-old version of Elements, not the 12-year-old Photoshop, continues to be the ideal tool for most people. Adobe has done a remarkable job with new features, performance and integration into its Creative Cloud family. And what about the new anticipated 2020 version? My hope is that the debut of Elements 2020 will be about more than just looking at the future. The hardware will grow improved, and the software will better integrate into the creative process. There’s still a lot of room for Photoshop to grow. That’s part of its legacy, though.
