Avalanche’s bold use of shooting mechanics, even allowing players to bring down vehicles, help turn what would be a dull and repetitive experience into an immersive experience. In one short passage from the desert, I find myself riding in a vehicle, travelling along a clearly marked way, and then ditching it and continuing on foot, my movement slowed by the distance and the difficulties of changing direction in this unfavourable terrain.
“The camera is always watching us, so we know when to run and when to ambush,” Rooke explains, when I ask him if the possibilities of this world are limited by the camera. “We interact with the environment.”
In another moment of desert fun, I find myself running across the top of a rock, landing on some sticks and then leaping up to a ledge that barely contains me. The camera pans out to allow me a better view, but I see something that makes me stop in my tracks – a large pothole.
Viewing this bit of the landscape is a challenge, which is somewhat rewarding when I overcome it – but what’s dropped clearly onto the screen is that I have to avoid the pothole. The three members of Mad Max have become even more threatening to me. Is the game trying to tell me that the heavens are about to open, or that these three people will kill me just because they want to put a hole through my back?
There are plenty of similar moments in the desert. Avalanche have tried to create something that not only looks great, but lets you play freely, without requiring you to pay attention to every monotonous service truck that comes into view.
